The Insurance Verification Specialist reports to the Practice Administrator. They are responsible for completing scheduling and documentation for all surgeries, precertification authorizations for surgery, and collecting any pre-surgery payments
Major duties and responsibilities:
- Assist with scheduling all surgical procedures at the appropriate surgery center or facility, preoperative testing at appropriate hospitals or offices or surgical instrumentation
- Obtain pre-certification authorization for surgery for both primary and secondary insurance carriers at least three (3) weeks prior to surgery date
- Ensure all patient consents for surgery are signed by the patient and witnessed prior to surgery
- Explain surgery financial policies to the patient, and arrange for prepayment for, self-pay, commercial insurance deductibles and coinsurance when applicable
- Chart all progress notes in EMR including all scheduling messages and voicemail messages regarding patients
- Check scheduling voicemail messages routinely throughout the day and return all messages before leaving for the day
- Fax or send History and Physicals to Hospital prior to surgery as needed
- Perform a final review of all paperwork to confirm completeness prior to surgery
- Schedule patients throughout the day per physician request, including entering surgery times and dates in to EMR
- Assist clinical office staff with patient care questions
- Other duties as assigned
- Associates Degree Preferred
- Medical training in terminology
- Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in physicians’ office
- Previous Procedure and Diagnostic Scheduling required
- Practice Management/EHR experience preferred
- Previous experience with insurance verification and billing preferred
- Previous experience with collections helpful
- Simple mathematical abilities
- Typing at 45 wpm with accuracy
- Medical terminology with CPT-4 procedure coding. ICD-10 diagnostic coding preferred
