Position Summary
The Director, RCM – Coding & Billing provides strategic and operational leadership over all coding and billing functions within the Revenue Cycle Management department. Reporting to the SVP of RCM, the Director is accountable for setting departmental strategy, driving enterprise-level performance against key financial and operational metrics, ensuring organization-wide compliance, and serving as a senior partner to clinical, operational, and executive stakeholders. This position owns the end-to-end coding and billing lifecycle—including coding accuracy, charge capture, claim submission quality, denial prevention, and payer-specific compliance—and manages coding and billing managers, team leads, and staff across all practices and service lines.
Key Responsibilities
- Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and hold accountable a team of coding and billing managers, team leads, and individual contributors; set clear performance expectations aligned with enterprise RCM goals.
- Design the organizational structure, staffing model, and career development framework for the function.
- Drive a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and professional excellence.
- Coding Compliance & Quality Assurance
- Establish and maintain organization-wide coding standards, policies, and audit programs to ensure compliance with federal, state, Medicare/Medicaid, and commercial payer requirements.
- Serve as the senior escalation point for complex coding discrepancies, payer disputes, and compliance inquiries; partner with Compliance and Legal to mitigate risk.
- Monitor regulatory changes (ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS) and proactively assess operational and financial impact.
- Billing Operations & Denial Management
- Oversee end-to-end billing operations including charge capture, claim scrubbing, submission, and follow-up across all practices and service lines.
- Analyze denial trends at the enterprise level; develop and execute strategic initiatives to reduce rework, accelerate claim turnaround, and maximize reimbursement.
- Evaluate and optimize billing system configurations, workflows, and automation opportunities.
- Stakeholder & Provider Partnership
- Build strong relationships with provider practices and clinical leadership to align on documentation standards, coding expectations, and billing workflows.
- Partner with Complaince for provider education initiatives on documentation improvement and coding best practices; measure impact.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to executive leadership on coding and billing performance, risks, and opportunities.
- Performance Management & Reporting
- Own departmental KPIs—coding accuracy, clean claim rate, days in A/R, denial rate, cash collections, and productivity—set targets and drive results.
- Develop and deliver executive-level reporting and dashboards with actionable insights for senior leadership.
- Support budget planning and resource allocation; manage staffing and vendor costs within approved budgets.
- Training & Change Management
- Design onboarding, training, and continuing education programs for all coding and billing staff
- Lead change management for system implementations, workflow redesigns, payer policy changes, and new practice integrations.
