The Billing Specialist, is responsible for overseeing the billing process for patients. Their duties include processing payments on behalf of a customer or patient, maintaining organized financial records to aide reporting and calculating bill totals by looking through previous financial statements.
Major duties and responsibilities:
- Processing patient payments and refunds.
- Recognizing patient underpayments or overpayments and rectifying them accordingly for refunds
- Creating suitable payment plans for patients based on the practice policy
- Communicating with the insurance company to determine if charges were processed correctly
- Answering patients’ questions regarding unsettled medical bills, reimbursements, and billing discrepancies.
- Contacting patients through email, written correspondence, or telephone to inform them of overdue balances.
- Working knowledge of insurance AR follow up. Very knowledgeable of payor denials, reason codes, polices and guidelines.
- Resubmit claims and initiate corrected claims. Familiar with working with Electronic Medical Records and Clearing House claim rejections.
- Experience with all payors which includes Medicare, Managed Medicare, Medicaid and commercial.
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
- Minimum of three year experience working with medical billing procedures and insurance programs.
- Ability to retain knowledge of general clinic practices, policies and procedures.
- Accuracy and meticulous attention to detail is required.
- Must be able to organize and work independently.
